"Mother Star" was written in the first week of Aotearoa's March 2020 lockdown. The song was written with the intention of capturing a sense of hope. In retrospect I realised that while the song is framed as a conversation with the sun, it was perhaps more a dialogue with myself: on the one side it is a plea for hope and on the other, a reminder to be the best human I can be in the face of widespread confusion, frustration and anxiety.

My friend, my foe
"Will there be more?"
Question the light, she may grant you an answer

I talk to the morning sun
She keeps me safe, she keeps me whole
She sees us all,
Silent and patient

Will it be hard?
Will I be scared of every daybreak?
Will it be long?
Only I think it's gone all wrong
Is it true? Is it so?

Shine on down
(We all need love to keep it together)
Break this darkness
(We'll find some strength to keep it together)
Thaw my frozen soul

I think it's odd that I don't feel alone

Pleading with a cooling dusk

She studies me warmly.
"Will you be kind? Will you soothe the faint of hope now?
Will you be bold, to find the right bred through this wrong?
Make it true. Make it so."
